Super Mario 3D Land in Times Square

13 Nov

Today is officially the launch of Super Mario 3D Land, but yesterday New York City was beset by a promo and pre-launch sale of the game in Times Square.  Fans were promised a life-sized Mario game that they could bounce and run through, along with tanuki ears and tails given to those who participated, in honor of Tanuki Mario.  The game would be sold a day early at the Toy ‘R’ Us in Times Square, and Mushroom Kingdom pizza would be given to the first thousand people who tweeted in Times Square.

The festivities officially started at 10 AM, but anticipating a gathering of rabid fans, I showed up at 8:30 AM.  True to form, hundreds of people had already shown up before me.

As it got closer to time, more fans dressed up as Mario characters showed up, along with dozens of hired Marios, creating somewhat of a Mario spectacle.

Once the event started… things got crazy. The concept of the event was great, but Nintendo dropped the ball in organization. Because of the lack of space in Times Square, the line had to be doubled, tripled, and quadrupled on itself, which caused massive cutting problems. Alpha mothers screamed at each other for cutting in line, kids whined and cried, and thugs glared at you for accusing them of blatantly cutting in line. After fans finally managed to find their way to the registration table, they only found out that “special certain people” were allowed to get the ears and tail. I later found out that owners of 3DS would get the full set, while those that dressed up fully only got the ears. Regardless of the stressful line and disappointment over the ears and tail, the event was pretty cool once you got in. There were trampolines that emitted the Mario money sound with mystery boxes hung above them, a pipe slide, a flagpole with the Mario flag on it, and various other things to jump, run, and sit on. As a bonus, Nintendo hired a bunch of parkour guys to run around in Mario costumes, flipping off of platforms and doing tricks to show us untalented peasants how to properly play in Mario 3D Land.

All craziness aside, fans were given a choice to play the new game while they waited in line and after they had gone through the obstacle course. The game had great graphics and relies heavily on distance judgement, which adds a great new aspect to the traditional Mario game. Hopefully next time when Nintendo tries something like this, they’ll have better organization. Here is the official video footage from the event (yours truly is in it):
